Southwood became Muncie Burris’ 13th straight Class 2A championship victim Saturday at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena.

The No. 5 Knights lost to the top-ranked Owls in three games, 25-9, 25-8, 25-16, in a match that took an hour.

Burris, ranked in the top five nationally, has not lost a 2A tournament match since the multiclass system began in 1997.

Southwood finished 33-6; Burris is 40-0.

“They are awesome,” Southwood coach Tom Finicle said of the Owls. “We never got on track. They are that good, and they made us look bad.

“Their coach said that’s as cleanly as they have played in weeks, and (I) told him thanks for saving it for us. We battled, but we just didn’t have enough weapons.

“I am so proud of our kids to get us to this point. It was quite an experience to even get this far, but too bad we had to run into Burris.”

Southwood senior Mallory Harnish, who had 10 digs in the title game, was named the Class 2A mental attitude award winner.

There were 10 times the score was tied, and only once did the lead change.

Abby Harness led the Knights with six kills, while Meghan Binkerd, Hannah Kirk and Celeste McCormick each added two.

The Knights beat Fairfield (31-5) in four games in the morning semifinal match at Delta.

Southwood won 18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18.

The Falcons were making their fourth straight state finals appearance.
