IPFW lecturer faces welfare fraud charge

A Fort Wayne man faces a felony charge of welfare fraud after investigators say he lied about his income to get food stamps, according to Allen Superior Court records filed Monday.

Investigators say Mark Hart lied to Allen County Division of Family Resources about his income between August 2008 and September 2009, and as a result received more than $5,200 worth of food stamps he was not entitled to, court records state. Hart, 40, used the food stamps for himself and his four children, ages 7 to 15, court records state.

Hart has been employed as a limited-term lecturer at IPFW since 2004, court records state. The university’s Web site lists Hart as an employee in the computer science department. Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne spokeswoman Susan Alderman said she was not yet able to confirm Monday night whether Hart was still employed there.

Hart also held positions at Shambaugh & Son Construction Co. and with Chris Dunn Consulting Co. during the time he is accused of committing the welfare fraud, court records stateHart’s earnings during his employment with those two companies totaled more than $100,000 in 2008, court records state.

Hart, of the 2000 block of Glenwood Avenue, faces one charge and had not yet been arrested Monday night.
