Scouting report: The Thunder’s second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs will be a formidable challenge: Undefeated and No. 7 Case Western Reserve, which has won 31 straight regular-season games. The Spartans average 42.8 points per game and bring to the table one of Division III’s most potent passing offenses, led by quarterback Dan Whalen. Whalen has completed just less than 70 percent of his passes this season (218 of 313) for 3,010 yards and 31 touchdowns, and has thrown just seven interceptions. … Trine will counter with its own standout quarterback – Eric Watt, who’s thrown for 1,814 yards and 21 touchdowns and run for 443 yards and three scores – and running back Kent Biller, who’s rushed for 883 yards and 10 touchdowns and averages 7.2 yards per carry.
