Knight will speak for state’s basketball Hall

INDIANAPOLIS – Bob Knight is returning to Indiana after all.

The former Hoosiers coach will speak at a Dec. 17 fundraiser in Indianapolis to benefit the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

The event comes less than six weeks after Knight missed a ceremony inducting him into Indiana University’s athletics Hall of Fame in Bloomington.

Double victory for Harvicks

Kevin Harvick made a late pass to win the season-ending Trucks Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Harvick’s wife, Delana, clinched the owners’ championship when Ron Hornaday Jr. finished eighth.

Reliever John Grabow signed a $7.5 million, two-year contract from the Cubs. … The White Sox are closing in on a contract with free-agent shortstop Omar Vizquel, according to sources.

Ants fall in Erie

Former Mad Ant Rod Wilmont scored a team-high 23 points as the Erie BayHawks outscored Fort Wayne 35-23 in the fourth quarter to claim a 106-100 preseason win in Erie, Pa. For the Mad Ants, Ron Howard led all scorers with 24 points. In other news, Ants center Chris Hunter signed with the Golden State Warriors, becoming the D-League’s first call-up of the 2009-10 season.

Tyler Sheehan threw for 338 yards and two TDs to lead Bowling Green to a 36-20 win over host Akron. … DaJuane Collins ran for two scores and Morgan Williams rushed for another to lead host Toledo to a 47-21 win over Eastern Michigan.

Griffing misses Q-School cut

Quinn Griffing of Fort Wayne, who shot a 63 at Champions Tour Q-School Thursday in Scottsdale Ariz., did not fair so well Friday. Griffing carded a 69 and missed qualifying by three strokes.

Lee Westwood shot a 3-under 69 to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Dubai World Championship. Seven players are tied for second place at 7 under, two shots behind Westwood. … Sophie Gustafson has moved within two shots of leader Lorena Ochoa at the weather-delayed LPGA Tour Championship in Richmond, Texas.

Homestead coach honored

Homestead boys and girls coach Chad Englehart was recently honored as Indiana Swimming’s Club Coach of the Year. In recognition of this honor, Englehart will be headed to the USA Swimming Golden Goggles awards ceremony in Hollywood on Sunday.
