NEW YORK – Jim Boeheims Syracuse Orange used a 22-1 run to open the second half of an 87-71 victory over No. 6 North Carolina on Friday night in the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic.
Thats about as good as it gets, Boeheim said, and it was against North Carolina and it was here.
North Carolina had a 39-37 halftime lead but that was gone in a hurry as Brandon Triche and Arinze Onuaku had field goals in the first 40 seconds. By the time the run ended 8 minutes into the second half Syracuse had a 59-40 lead.
Tournament MVP Wesley Johnson had 25 points for the Orange (4-0), who beat California 95-73 in the semifinals.
Ed Davis had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Marcus Ginyard added 15 points for the Tar Heels (4-1), who lost almost all of a 19-point second-half lead before beating No. 15 Ohio State 77-73 to reach the title game.
No. 2 MICHIGAN STATE 75, TOLEDO 62: Draymond Green had 15 points to lead a balanced attack for the Spartans, who won their 42nd straight game at home against a non-conference opponent.
Tom Izzo, in his 15th season at Michigan State, moved within one of tying his mentor Jud Heathcote for the most wins in school history. Izzo has 339.
No. 5 VILLANOVA 71, No. 18 DAYTON 65: Corey Fisher scored 18 points to lead the Wildcats in the second round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Villanova led by 18 points early in the second half, but the Flyers trimmed the lead to 62-60 with 2:23 to play. Luke Fabrizius led the Flyers with 16 points.
No. 10 TENNESSEE 105, EAST CAROLINA 66: Scotty Hopson scored 25 points for the Volunteers in the first round of the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands. Bobby Maze added 15 points for the Vols, Cameron Tatum had 14 and Tyler Smith 13.
No. 15 OHIO STATE 76, No. 13 CALIFORNIA 70: Evan Turner had 26 points and 14 rebounds, his fourth double-double in four games, to lead the Buckeyes in the 2K Sports Classic third-place game in New York.
Jon Diebler added 14 points for Ohio State, and Dallas Lauderdale had eight points and seven blocked shots. Jerome Randle had 26 points for California.
No. 15 MICHIGAN 77, HOUSTON BAPTIST 55: Manny Harris scored 25 points, and DeShawn Sims added 22 to help the host Wolverines. Mario Flaherty scored 17 points for the Huskies.
No. 21 GEORGIA TECH 70, GEORGE MASON 62: Gani Lawal had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets in a Puerto Rico Tip-Off consolation game. Derrick Favors also had 18 points for the Yellow Jackets. Kevin Foster led George Mason with 15 points.
No. 22 CLEMSON 89, UNC GREENSBORO 67: Trevor Booker scored a season-high 17 points, and to lead the visiting Tigers. Milton Jennings scored 14 points for Clemson, and Andre Young added 13.
No. 25 MARYLAND 82, NEW HAMPSHIRE 55: Landon Milbourne scored a career-high 24 points as the host Terps cruised in their final tuneup for the Maui Invitational.
No. 1 CONNECTICUT 87, HOLY CROSS 34: Maya Moore scored 21 points and Tina Charles added as the visiting Huskies won their 42nd straight.
No. 10 TEXAS 96, NORTH TEXAS 52: Kat Nash scored 20 points and the host Longhorns shook off a blowout loss to UConn. Ashley Gayle finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks for Texas.
No. 13 FLORIDA STATE 101, STETSON 35: Alysha Harvin scored 19 points, and Jacinta Monroe added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the host Seminoles.
DEPAUL 89, CORNELL 50: Katherine Harry came off the bench to score 16 points as the Blue Demons breezed to a win in the Maggie Dixon Classic in Chicago.
No. 22 VANDERBILT 75, UC RIVERSIDE 60: Jence Rhoads scored 14 points and as the Commodores won at home to avenge a loss to the Highlanders last season.
