SOUTH BEND – City officials are envisioning a transformation of South Bend’s minor league baseball stadium that could cost more than $30 million, although questions are already being raised about taking on such a large project.
The initial plans suggested by Mayor Stephen Luecke’s administration for the 23-year-old Coveleski Stadium include renovating restrooms and the heating and cooling systems, along with new seating and outfield picnic areas and adding a center-field entrance.
Some of the work could be done before the 2010 baseball season, and Luecke said the project could boost development around the stadium.
City Councilman Henry Davis Jr. said he is concerned about the project’s expense when the stadium is only a seasonal entertainment venue.
