WASHINGTON - Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., is among 15 Senate Democrats who announced Wednesday they will meet regularly to try to "pursue sensible solutions."

"We're not ideologues. We are pragmatic. We're not strident partisans. We care about our country more than our party," Bayh said on an MSNBC program.

Bayh said because it takes 60 votes to adopt legislation in the Senate, the group of centrists will have clout.

Bayh said the group - the Moderate Dems Working Group - will work on deficit containment, health care reform, the housing crisis, educational reform, energy policy and climate change.

"We have a wonderful opportunity to break gridlock in Washington and accomplish big things for the American people, but we also have a responsibility to pursue sensible solutions that will work," Bayh said.

Of the 15 senators in the group, Bayh was the only one who voted against the $410 billion spending bill that will pay for most domestic programs for the rest of the year.
