Weis' Four Objectives

As he opened spring practice Friday at noon, Charlie Weis laid out exactly what he's expecting from his team this year ... and his goals are both lofty and critical.

Weis laid out a four-pronged objective plan for the spring, which is broken up like this:

  • Coaching staff: Meshing the coaching staff together, since there are a lot of new people in a bunch of new positions, into one cohesive unit.

  • Self Scouting: Offensively, working on the running game. Defensively, switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 so having players understanding their positions. Special teams, working on return games.

  • Competition: "Some of these guys that have been (here), it's time for them to step up," Weis said. "Some of these guys can't go full speed, potential fifth-year guys you're talking about, you have recruits coming in in the summertime. Some of these guys, it's their last opportunity to make a name for themselves. "I think it'll be a very competitive spring."

  • Maturity and finishing the game: "I can tell you on both sides of the ball that players turn to," Weis said. "But right now I can't tell you the guys who are going to be the leaders of those leaders, and therefore the leaders of the team."
