Fort Wayne Community Schools is not the only northeast Indiana school district cutting its budget to accommodate rising costs and the economic climate.

FWCS may be chopping the most by eliminating 49 teaching positions and cutting in other areas, including central office personnel, but it’s also the district with the largest budget in the area, at more than $286 million in 2009.

On Tuesday, the East Allen County Schools board approved $1.5 million in cuts, which include reducing summer school, reducing academic support expenses and eliminating six teaching positions through attrition.

East Allen will also reduce the district’s courier service to three days a week; eliminate a day of teacher visits to students’ homes during the summer; restructure the central office and each building’s non-teaching staff; suspend New Haven Elementary School’s world language program; and reduce the number of days vocational education teachers can work in the summer.

The East Noble County Schools board voted this month to close LaOtto Elementary School; consolidate the district’s three middle schools into the Kendallville Middle School building; and reconfigure the six elementary schools.

The reorganization will result in the loss of about 16 jobs, including at least seven teaching positions, and is expected to save East Noble about $925,000.

North Adams Community Schools officials have already reconfigured their elementary grades and reduced staff. Staff cuts have already taken place and more are likely at Northern Wells Community Schools, which is tapping into its cash reserve to stay afloat.
