Statement issued by Taylor University on Monday:
Taylor University students studying in Orvieto, Italy, report they were unhurt during a 6.3 magnitude earthquake that shook Central Italy this morning.
Jennifer Nace (junior art major from Upland, Ind.), Joshua Read (junior, Indianapolis, Ind.) and Alexandra Seminaro (junior, Chagrin Falls, Ohio) are participating this spring in Semester Abroad studies in Orvieto, nearly 100 miles from the quake's epicenter near L'Aquila. All are art majors.
According to a CNN report, the death toll stands at 92 with more than 1,500 injuries.
Seminaro said she was jolted awake but did not realize it was an earthquake until later.
"It was about 3:30 in the morning and while I was sleeping I felt my bed move back and forth," said Seminaro in an e-mail exchange with Taylor officials. "I was still sleeping so I wasn't sure if I dreamed it or not. Then I had to ask myself if I was moving in my sleep. It was strange. I didn't hear anything. I wasn't scared because I didn't really know what happened or if it was just me.
"Before class this morning during breakfast one of my friends asked if I felt the 6.3 earth quake last night," she added. "I couldn't believe it ... God definitely protected us and we are all very thankful we are ok and nothing is damaged/no one is hurt. I know people back home are very concerned and worried and I hope they all know we are all okay."
