SOUTH BEND – John Goodman finally got his tryout at quarterback Wednesday. And afterward, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said the Bishop Dwenger graduate did about what he expected.
In essence, that means Goodman had some nerves but showed he could be effective and give Notre Dame an option behind junior starter Jimmy Clausen and sophomore backup Dayne Crist. It also means Goodman, who played quarterback at Dwenger, could get more repetitions at quarterback.
Theres a number of things you can do with him, Weis said. (Situational quarterback) is one way. Then youve got the trickery and deceit plays you can do as well. He gives you some flexibility to be creative and do some things.
While Goodman showed little rust Wednesday when throwing to receivers, he did throw behind some receivers and overthrew a couple of deep balls in the end zone. But he also showed accuracy and, as Weis said, came out throwing pellets.
Weis also said Goodman is in the top six of the wide receivers on the team – and probably higher than that.
In a Chicago Tribune story Sunday, Weis said he discussed with his family leaving Notre Dame after 2008. Weis clarified that by saying he talked with his family to lay out every possibility – including Weis possibly not coaching at Notre Dame in 2009 – but he was not looking to leave of his own volition.
When youre around a long time in this business, you have to deal with the negatives and have to have a plan just in case they end up happening, Weis said. Did I expect to be here? Yes. Did I expect that I was leaving? No. Did I have a conversation with my family about whether or not there is a possibility? Yeah.
Notre Dame will play at Purdue at 8 p.m. Sept. 26. It will be televised on either ABC or ESPN. The game will be the first night game between Purdue and Notre Dame since 2005.
Senior running back James Aldridge was not at the media portion of practice Wednesday and will likely be held out of the spring game Saturday. The four honorary captains – Jeff Faine, Justin Tuck, Bertrand Berry and Reggie Brooks – will address the team before Fridays practice. The offense won the coin toss Wednesday and will wear home jerseys and be on the home sideline.
