Winners

Craig Klugman: The Journal Gazette’s veteran editor is inducted today into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in recognition of his work for 27 years at the helm of the newspaper, where he is a champion for the public’s right to know.

Elvis fans: New Mississippi license plate honors legendary rocker ’n’ roller, who was born in Tupelo. Proceeds from the plate will go toward a youth center there that The King had wanted to build.

Montpelier: Photo of Indian statue that dominates the main downtown intersection of small Blackford County town is seen briefly in the opening sequence of new TV comedy, “Parks and Recreation.”

Kokomo, Evansville: Hoosier cities will get at least $5 million each for cleanup of superfund hazardous waste sites as part of federal stimulus money. Soil contaminated by lead and arsenic in the yards of 350 Evansville homes will be cleaned up; in Kokomo, the money will pay for waste removal and groundwater monitoring at the site of an old steel mill.

Milestones

Koehlinger Cycling: Venerable retail seller of Schwinn and Trek bicycles closes doors after 96 years in business.

Mark Fidrych: Dubbed “the Bird,” he frustrated batters and entertained fans with on-field antics in a rookie-of-the-year season for the Detroit Tigers in 1976. But he was a one-season wonder; injuries cut his promising career short. He died in an accident at age 54.

Judith Krug: Unheralded officer with the American Library Association championed free speech and fought numerous book bans and proposals to limit access to the Internet. She died at age 69.

Tossups

Motorists: Gasoline expected to go up to an average of $2.23 this summer, peaking at $2.30; another significant increase but much lower than last summer.

Losers

Plasma TVs: They’re great to watch, but they suck a lot of energy. So California is proposing energy limits on plasma and LCD televisions, which manufacturers and retailers oppose.

Phil Spector: Music producer famous for his “wall of sound” productions and for working with ex-Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison is convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson.

General Growth Properties: Largest owner of shopping malls – including Glenbrook Square – filed largest real estate bankruptcy in history, listing $27 billion in debts.

Rush Limbaugh: Conservative mouthpiece attacks president over last week’s pirate standoff. “If only President Obama had known that the three Somali community organizers were actually young black Muslim teenagers, I’m sure he wouldn’t have given the order to shoot. … There you have it, and three teenagers shot on the high seas at the order of President Obama.”
