Police warn of sweepstakes scam

Indiana State Police are warning Hoosiers about a new telephone scam that uses an authentic state agency’s name to make it sound more legitimate.

But the scammers are just putting a new twist on an old con, state police said.

In the hoax, callers claim to be from the Indiana Gaming Commission and inform their targets they have just won a sweepstakes. For just $2,000, to pay for processing and insurance, the targets can claim their cash prize, the callers say.

The trouble is, the Indiana Gaming Commission regulates gambling, it doesn’t organize it, nor does it administer sweepstakes or lotteries.

There are no known victims of the scam, but fraudulent calls have been made to residents in Indiana and Michigan, the state police said.
