When students reach eighth grade, they aren’t always the best at thinking about what they can do for others. In fact, they can be pretty self-centered, Blackhawk Middle School language arts teacher Allie Canfield-Klotz says.

But that doesn’t mean they need to stay that way.

"They’re at that age where they can turn into amazing human beings if they’re just pushed in the right direction," she said.

So she started the Gearing Others Toward Inspiration Together – GOT IT – club to help give Blackhawk eighth-graders that push.

The gestures may seem small – cleaning every student’s desk and writing positive notes for teachers or making a point of complimenting the people around them – but they help the students learn to think about helping other people, Canfield-Klotz said.

There’s a payoff for the students, too, eighth-grader Bailey Whitehill said. The things she does with GOT IT when they meet on Saturdays make her feel good about herself, she said.

And Blackhawk students have bought into the idea that a positive attitude and few good deeds can result in a big self-esteem boost. About 50 students have expressed interest in the club since it started in late February, Canfield-Klotz said.

For GOT IT’s next big project, the students will help take the pain out of grocery shopping by gathering at a local Scott’s store Saturday and helping shoppers carry out their groceries.
