Segment on schools' food backpacks to air today

NBC Nightly News is to air its piece today about an East Noble Schools program to put food in the hands of hungry students.

The national news show was in Kendallville earlier this month to shoot footage about the district's Boomerang Backpack program, which began in March at South Side Elementary School - where 64 percent of the students receive a free or reduced-price lunch.

The program hands out backpacks filled with child-friendly convenience foods every Friday, and students return the empty backpacks on Monday.

NBC Nightly News appears at 6:30 p.m. on WISE-TV 33.1, Comcast Channel 13 and Verizon FIOS Channel 4.
