A Waterloo man died Thursday after an early morning crash on DeKalb County Road 20, just east of the Noble County line.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department said a Jeep Grand Cherokee was headed east on Kammerer Road about 1:15 a.m. when it went through the stop sign at the county line road, going into a ditch, continuing about 44 feet before hitting a utility pole, and then stopping after another 20 feet.
Michael Benya of Waterloo, a passenger in the car, was critically injured and later died at Lutheran Hospital. Two other passengers, Travis Stackhouse of Corunna and Erik Vian of Auburn, had injuries that were not life-threatening, according to a written statement from the sheriff’s department.
The driver, Jennifer Grate, 20, of Waterloo, told police she was unfamiliar with the roadway and was not aware that it jogged. She was not injured, the statement said.
The crash is under investigation. The ages of the passengers were not immediately available from the sheriff’s department.
The department was assisted by the Indiana State Police, Noble County Sheriff’s Department, DeKalb County EMS, Lutheran Air and Corunna Fire Department.
