The Allen County Treasurer's Office has updated its monthly payment plan to give property taxpayers greater control over how much and when they pay.
Beginning this week, taxpayers can sign up for the revamped program online to control their account electronically.
An earlier version of the program required treasurer's staff to set up the plan and to manually pull the money from property owners' checking accounts each month. But many property owners didn't want to give checking-account information to the office, Treasurer Sue Orth said.
Now taxpayers can decide how much to send and which day of the month is best for them and can change both as needed. The payment plan is similar to having a utility bill automatically deducted from a checking account each month, Orth said.
The treasurer's Web site will also recommend a monthly payment based on last year's bill. When new tax bills are mailed this summer, they will show how much is left to be paid by November, she said.
