Robert Lara knocked in three runs with a double in a four-run eighth inning to lead the TinCaps to a 7-3 victory Tuesday over Great Lakes in Midland, Mich. Fort Wayne (14-4) took three of four in the series.
After Great Lakes had tied the game at 3 in the seventh, Fort Waynes first three batters in the eighth walked. Lara then laced a double to left, clearing the bases. Lara had just 18 at-bats coming into the game, with two RBI.
He later scored on an infield hit by Jeudy Valdez to make it 7-3.
Fort Wayne pitcher Simon Castro had his best outing of the season after struggling with his control his first three starts – 10 walks in 11 1/3 innings. The right-hander gave up one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts and just one walk.
Still, he did not factor in the decision.
Mike Watt, who had allowed the tying runs in relief in the seventh, retired the last six Loons to earn the victory, his first decision of the year.
The TinCaps scored twice in the fifth. First-round pick Jaff Decker drove in James Darnell with a double, and Decker scored on a single by Andy Parrino, who went 2 for 3.
Fort Wayne led 3-0 in the sixth when Decker picked up his second RBI with a bases-loaded walk that scored Sawyer Carroll.
The TinCaps led 3-1 going to the seventh, but Great Lakes scored twice off Watt to tie the game.
Fort Wayne travels today to Clinton, Iowa, to begin a three-game series with the LumberKings.
