Notre Dame won’t award Laetare

SOUTH BEND – The University of Notre Dame has decided against awarding the Laetare Medal, its highest honor, after a former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican turned it down over the school’s decision to honor President Obama at its commencement.

Instead, the Roman Catholic school said Thursday it will have federal Judge John T. Noonan Jr. give a speech. He was awarded the Laetare Medal in 1984.

The school had to change its plans after Harvard University law professor and abortion-rights opponent and scholar Mary Ann Glendon announced Monday that she would not accept the honor, saying the school shouldn’t be honoring Obama.
