Molten glass spills from furnace

DUNKIRK, Ind. – More than one million pounds of molten glass have spilled from an east-central Indiana company’s furnace.

No injuries were reported in the leak Friday at Saint-Gobain Containers, which manufactures about 2.5 million amber beer bottles a day.

The company said the extent of damage isn’t immediately known. The spill apparently resulted from a leak at the bottom of the furnace tank, a key part of a production process, and firefighters remained at the scene Friday night.

Dunkirk Fire Chief Steve Fields said all that can be done is to cool the glass as it pours out of the tank, but the effort was complicated by a major water main break in the city about 50 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
