Gas House, Takaoka reopening after face-lifts

Boasting an “industrial Victorian” makeover, Hall’s Old Gas House and Takaoka of Japan are expected to reopen May 13 after more than four months of renovations.

The Gas House will open at 11 a.m., and Takaoka will open at 5 p.m.

“It’s a neat old building that we’ve adapted as much as we possibly can to the original character,” manager Ben Hall says.

Besides the Gas House’s original maple floor (which has been exposed for a few years), the new look features tin ceilings, gas-style lamps in the main dining room, and booths that hint at days long gone – all of which gives the main-floor restaurant a more consistent theme and look, he says.

The bar has been moved and a lounge area created nearby. Plus, the bathrooms were redone and a chair-lift elevator was added to the main floor.

Upstairs, Takaoka has been remodeled with a new kitchen, carpeting, paint, lighting and hardwood flooring around the tables where chefs will still prepare dinner and entertain guests.

“The concept remains the same; the jokes remain the same,” Hall says.

The Hall’s Old Gas House menu has been refined a bit, but the traditional favorites are still there. Most entrées will range from $15 to $19, while the sandwiches, salads and appetizers typically are $10 or less.

Initially, the Gas House will take reservations only for parties of eight or more; smaller parties will be seated as tables are available.
