More than 300 local auto-supplier workers laid off

More than 300 employees are joining thousands of area auto workers in a long summer layoff.

A Ligonier plant that makes automotive glass notified Indiana officials this week that its 133 workers will be furloughed, some starting this week. Most are temporary, Guardian Industries Corp. said in its notice to the state, but some will be cut permanently.

And Columbia City-based Advanced Assembly LLC's 200 workers began an 11-week layoff Monday, plant manager Jerry LaMere said Friday.

Advanced Assembly makes seat systems for the Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras built at General Motors Corp.'s Allen County Assembly plant. The 2,600 people employed there also started an 11-week shutdown Monday as GM tries to reduce inventories of its pickup trucks.
