5 area highway projects qualify for stimulus funds

Five more northeast Indiana highway projects are among 33 statewide that qualify for federal stimulus funding, the Indiana Department of Transportation announced today.

The area projects are:

  • Indiana 1 travel lanes, Allen County;
  • Travel lanes at U.S. 20, Steuben County;
  • U.S. 33 at Indiana 109 intersection improvement, Noble County;
  • Environmental mitigation in Pokagon State Park, 500 feet north of Indiana 127 and Interstate 69, Steuben County; and

  • Indiana 1 functional hot mix asphalt from Indiana 427 to U.S. 20, Steuben County.

The 33 projects in 20 counties statewide are valued at $157.9 million, and bring total money set aside for projects in Indiana to $257 million, the transportation department said in a statement.

Indiana has exceeded the $230 million required to be obligated by July 1, the statement said. As a result, the state is eligible to receive unspent money left over from states that didn't obligate half their stimulus funds by the deadline.
