Souder seeks $37 million in transportation bill

Souder

– Rep. Mark Souder, R-3rd, wants Congress to single out repairs to Adams Center Road in southeastern Allen County when it writes a bill to oversee transportation projects.

He also asked lawmakers to guarantee that Grace College and Theological Seminary in Kosciusko County gets a shuttle bus system. He asked for $340,000 for the buses.

The $14 million request to repair Adams Center Road as it approaches Interstate 469 was one of $37 million in projects Souder has labeled a high priority and asked the Transportation Committee to include by name in a bill that will oversee transportation spending for the next five years.

The committee has yet to decide how to allocate the money. In past years, however, the total amount of money a state got for road and bridge construction and repair did not increase despite the number of Hoosier projects specified in the bill. Instead, the lawmakers’ pet projects were moved to the top of a state’s priority list.

Under new rules, House members must publicly release the projects they are going to bat for.

Some, including Reps. Mike Pence, R-6th, and Dan Burton, R-5th, said they won’t propose any. They said they’d rather have the state highway department make decisions about transportation priorities.

In addition to Adams Center Road and the Grace College shuttle buses, Souder asked for:

•$2.1 million for a bike and pedestrian bridge over Jefferson Boulevard at Lutheran Hospital.

•$4 million to widen 4.2 miles of Bass Road between Hillegas and Scott roads.

•$6.2 million for medians, planting beds and sidewalks in downtown Angola.

•$5.6 million to widen a section of County Road 17 in Elkhart and Kosciusko counties.

•$4.8 million to replace nine Citilink buses with hybrid diesel buses and retrofit 17 buses to transport people in wheelchairs.
