A high school shooting guard and a junior college forward have signed national letters of intent to play basketball at IPFW next season, the university announced Tuesday.
Elgin Eli Lee, a 6-foot-4 guard from Progressive Christian Academy in Camp Springs, Md., and 6-8, 220-pound forward Oleg Kovalov from Cloud Community College in Concordia, Kan., will play for the Mastodons next season.
Lee averaged 25.5 points and five rebounds at the academy. Lee, from Memphis, Tenn., scored 30 points in the Division 2A state championship game while at Briarcrest Christian. He was named Best of the Preps by the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Kovalov is listed as a versatile forward who can play either inside or out. He averaged 9.1 points and five rebounds at Cloud Community College, where his 72.3 free throw percentage was ranked 15th in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

IPFW finished 13-17 last season.

Cassie (Kline) Crider was officially hired as the girls basketball coach at Carroll, approved Monday by the Northwest Allen County Schools board. Crider, a former Huntington North and Saint Francis standout, replaces Tony Harl.
John Wall, one of the nations most sought-after high school recruits, has decided to play for John Calipari and Kentucky, according to several media reports. The point guard from Raleigh, N.C., had been pursued by Duke, Kansas and Miami.
Guard C.J. Henry officially enrolled at Kansas and will be eligible to play next season. The move reunites Henry with his brother, Xavier. The Henry brothers join incoming freshmen Elijah Johnson and Thomas Robinson, and Jeff Withey, a 6-11 transfer from Arizona who will be eligible following the fall semester.
Dukes Gerald Henderson has signed with an agent and will remain in the NBA draft. The school said the 6-foot-4 junior, a third-team AP All-American, has signed with Arn Tellem.
A team from the Atlantic Coast Conference will replace Conference USA as the opponent for a Mid-American Conference team in next years GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala. The ACC will send its ninth pick to Mobile. Conference USA has sent a team in each of the GMAC Bowls 10 years, including last years Ball State-Tulsa matchup. In the new deal, the Mobile-based game gets the first selection of MAC teams in the 2009, 2011 and 2013 seasons. The Motor City Bowl in Detroit gets the second MAC pick in those seasons and first selection in 2010 and 2012. The International Bowl in Toronto has the third MAC selection.
A bankruptcy judge has ordered the NHL and Phoenix Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes to mediation in an attempt to resolve their fight over who is in control of a franchise that both sides agree is insolvent. Judge Redfield Baum made the ruling after hearing arguments from attorneys on both sides in U.S. bankruptcy court Tuesday over the NHLs contention that Moyes had no authority to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this month. The league and Moyes are to report their progress at a status hearing May 27. Meanwhile, Baum said that the question of whether the team could relocate must be decided before the franchise is sold.
Rachel Alexandras victory in the Preakness Stakes drew the most viewers to the second leg of racings Triple Crown in five years and the second-most in 20 years. The national rating for the race portion, when Rachel Alexandra became the first filly in 85 years to win the race, was a 6.8 with a 16 share, the highest since 2004.
