Memorial Day is Monday, and several events are scheduled throughout northeast Indiana to observe the holiday.
Proper etiquette for displaying the American flag is encouraged, said Jim Goodpaster, commander of American Legion Post 82. Flags should be raised to half-staff in the morning, Goodpaster said, and be raised to full staff at noon. Although raising the flag to half-staff in the morning is not mandatory, its a good idea, Goodpaster said.
Many people think they should have their flag out all day and night, Goodpaster said, but the American flag should be taken down at sunset. If the flag is up at night, it should be illuminated, he said. During the day, flags should be in plain view and not tangled in trees or bushes.
