Memorial Day Events

A list of some events in northeast Indiana scheduled for this weekend:
Today through Sunday
•The Northern Indiana Bluegrass Association will conduct its Memorial Day Weekend Festival at the Noble County 4-H Fairgrounds, 580 N. Fair St., Kendallville. The festival charges no cover on Thursday, $8 on Friday, $15 on Saturday and $12 on Sunday.
Friday through Monday
•Camp Potawotami in LaGrange County hosts a Memorial Day Family Camp. To register, participants can call office manager Kay Lafevor at 1-800-966-9622.
Friday
•Northcrest Elementary School conducts its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. A member of each branch of the military will visit the school, and students will read the names of local fallen soldiers.
Saturday
•American Legion Post 47 Band performs at a free Memorial Day concert at 1 p.m. at Barr Street Market in downtown Fort Wayne. Visitors can use the parking lot of the History Center, 302 E. Berry St.
Monday
•Pokagon State Park near Angola will host Memorial Day Morning at the McClue Reserve at 7:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to park at the nature center and carpool to McClue.
•American Legion Post 202 in Butler hosts a memorial service at Eddy Cemetery near Butler at 8:30 a.m.
•Waynedale Memorial Day Parade begins at 9 a.m. at Waynedale United Methodist Church, 2501 Church St. Hot dogs and chili will be served afterward at the post.
•American Legion Post 31 in Angola will have a memorial service at 9 a.m. on the public circle in downtown Angola.
•American Legion Post 43 in Decatur will have a service at 9 a.m. at Decatur Cemetery and Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery, both on U.S. 224 West.
•American Legion Post 31 in Angola hosts a 10 a.m. memorial service at Pleasant Lake Elementary School.
•American Legion Post 246, 410 E. Park Drive, Albion, hosts a march from the Albion courthouse to Rose Hill Cemetery for a memorial service at 10 a.m. A flag-retiring ceremony will follow at the post.
•American Legion Post 420, 112 E. South St., Monroeville, hosts a Memorial Day service at Monroeville Cemetery at 10 a.m. The post will have a chicken barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $6.50.
•American Legion Post 49 in Warsaw will have a memorial service 10:30 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery off Maple Avenue in Warsaw. An indoor picnic afterward at the post will begin at 1 p.m.
•American Legion Post 202 will host an 11 a.m. memorial service at Butler Cemetery on DeKalb County Road 28. An open house will be held at the post afterward.
•Memorial Day parade begins at Parnell Avenue and State Boulevard at 11 a.m. and ends at Memorial Coliseum. A service at the Coliseum will be held after the parade.

•American Legion Club of LaGrange will have a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in LaGrange.
•Fremont American Legion, 310 S. Wayne St., will have a Memorial Day parade at 11 a.m., followed by a service at the post.
•American Legion Post 157, 115 S. Main St., Churubusco, will have an 11 a.m. service at Eel River Cemetery on Carroll Road. A meal will be served afterward at the post.
•American Legion Post 86, 322 S. Main St., Kendallville, will have a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. A meal will follow.
•American Legion Post 240 in Avilla will have a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Avilla Cemetery, followed by another ceremony at Saint Marys Cemetery. A lunch will be served afterward at the post.
•From 11 a.m. to noon, the National Military History Center on County Road 11-A in Auburn will host a Memorial Day remembrance ceremony.
•Parkview Family YMCA will host a free Memorial Day party from noon to 3:45 p.m.
at the YMCA Hattersley Splash Park, 10001 Dawsons Creek Blvd.
•American Legion Post 31 will host a 3 p.m. flag dedication at Elliot Manor, 617 Williams St. in Angola.
•The Huntington County Veterans’ Service Office will have a memorial service at 6:30 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene on Flaxmill Road in Huntington. The service will honor the 87 veterans from Huntington County who died in 2008.

Memorial Day is Monday, and several events are scheduled throughout northeast Indiana to observe the holiday.

Proper etiquette for displaying the American flag is encouraged, said Jim Goodpaster, commander of American Legion Post 82. Flags should be raised to half-staff in the morning, Goodpaster said, and be raised to full staff at noon. Although raising the flag to half-staff in the morning is not mandatory, it’s a good idea, Goodpaster said.

Many people think they should have their flag out all day and night, Goodpaster said, but the American flag should be taken down at sunset. If the flag is up at night, it should be illuminated, he said. During the day, flags should be in plain view and not tangled in trees or bushes.
