Fleeing theft suspect hurts officer in fight

Indiana State Police arrested a suspect in a DeKalb County home break-in Thursday after police said he fled and injured a trooper.

Master Trooper Doug Kelly tried to pull over Coty A. Alaura, 23, of Fremont about 9:45 a.m. Thursday. Alaura was spotted in a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville that had been reported stolen a half-hour earlier during a break-in in the 200 block of DeKalb County Road 55, southwest of Hamilton.

During the break-in, the suspect entered the occupied home armed with a shotgun, police said.

Instead of pulling over, Alaura, who was northbound on Indiana 1 near Metz Road in Steuben County, sped off the road, turned around and headed south on Indiana 1, police said.

After driving about a mile, Alaura stopped in a driveway and fled on foot. During the chase, Alaura threw a rock, which hit Kelly in the head. When the trooper caught up to the suspect, they briefly scuffled until the Hamilton marshal used his Taser to subdue Alaura, police said.

Kelly suffered two broken fingers and a head injury in the struggle. He was treated at a hospital and released, state police spokesman Sgt. Ron Galaviz said.

Alaura was being held at the Steuben County Jail on a count of battery to a police officer, pending other charges.
