1 dead, 1 critical in separate Steuben crashes

A driver was killed and another injured in separate overnight crashes in Steuben County, according to the Steuben County Sheriff's Department.

The driver of a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 died of blunt-force trauma at the scene of an accident at 11:21 p.m. Thursday on County Road 600 W, south of County Road 30 N in Jackson Township.

The victim's name is being withheld until relatives have been notified.

Police said the truck was southbound on County Road 600 W when the driver veered off the west side of the road and overcorrected. The truck then went off the road on the east side and struck a tree head-on, igniting a fire.

The asphalt road was dry at the time of the crash, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, police said. The sheriff's department was assisted by the Angola Police Department, Steuben County EMS, Steuben County Cornor and Salem Township Fire Rescue.

The second accident, at 1:17 a.m. this morning, critically injured Ronald Dale Shuler, 25, of Angola. He was taken to Cameron Hospital in Angola and later flown to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne with possible internal injuries.

Shuler was driving north on Indiana 127 in a 1992 Chevrolet Lumina minivan south of County Road 400 N when the minivan left the east side of the road, crossed the road, rolled several times and came to rest in the west ditch. Shuler was ejected from the minivan.

Police said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, and Shuler did not appear to have used his seat belt.

The Steuben County Sheriff's Department was assisted by Steuben County EMS, Angola Fire Rescue, Fremont Police Department, Angola Police Department, Indiana State Police and Steuben County Communications.
