A whistle blew and the race was on Wednesday for 60 students at Waynedale Elementary who participated in the Wonder Mile.

The Top 15 qualifying girls and boys in each of two grade brackets, second and third, and fourth and fifth, participated. Their family and classmates looked on from around the playground behind the school. .

Justuss Boice placed first overall for the boys with a time of 6:18. The fifth-grader said he looks forward to the Wonder Mile every year.

“I just work and try and do my best,” Boice said.

Fifth-grader Samantha Alexander was the top finishing girl with a time of 6:59.

“I feel really great,” she said. “I didn’t train at all. My parents say it’s because I have long legs for my age.”

Her name, along with Boice’s, will be engraved on a plaque inside the school. Students placing in the top three among each race will receive a trophy on the last day of school, said Mark Hageman, physical education teacher.

The top finishers among second- and third-graders were third-grader Mikayla Bailey with a time of 7:29, and second-grader Alphonso James with a time of 7:11.
