For the past three years, Notre Dame has paid its former football coach, Tyrone Willingham, more than its current coach, Charlie Weis, in base compensation.
For 2007-08, it added men's basketball coach Mike Brey to that list. As part of the story just posted on The Journal Gazette's Web site, Weis' total base package is still third among non-officers, trustees and directors behind Michael D. Donovan and Tyrone Willingham at $640,851.
Notre Dame, for the third straight year, paid Willingham $650,000 as part of a settlement from his Nov. 30, 2004, firing.
In base pay -- before benefits and expenses -- Brey surpassed Weis. Brey earned $526,757 in base pay in 2007-08 fiscal year, up from $478,299 a year ago.
Weis was paid $521,750 in base compensation before benefits and expenses in '07-'08, down from $598,000 a year ago.
Last year, university spokesman Dennis Brown explained coaching salaries can fluctuate because of potential bonuses. A message left with Brown on Wednesday was not immediately returned.
All numbers were gathered from the school's latest Form 990 federal tax form.
Weis' pay is likely much more, as the Form 990 figures don't include money he earns from outside sources, including football camps, radio shows and apparel deals.
When reached Wednesday, athletic director Jack Swarbrick declined comment on salaries listed in the Form 990.
