NASCAR is coming back to Eldora Speedway.
The 55-year-old half-mile dirt track in Rossburg, Ohio, purchased by Tony Stewart in 2004, will again welcome a collection of NASCARs leading lights in the fifth annual Prelude to the Dream on Wednesday.
Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne and Kyle Busch will join Stewart and a slew of others for the annual charity all-star late model race, which will be aired as an HBO pay-for-view event.
Proceeds from the pay-for-view will go to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Operation Homefront and Fisher House, all of which treat severely injured military personnel or the families of soldiers killed in the line of duty.
The broadcast starts at 7 p.m. and will be replayed immediately after the event. All thats needed to order the event is a digital cable box. An HBO subscription is not required.
Tom Smith won the 75-lap feature in the Super Pro series Saturday night, highlighting a busy night of racing at Baer Field Speedway. Other feature winners included Tony Dager (modifieds), Jamie Garrett (street stocks), David Fugate (mini-stocks) and Bobby Smith (front-wheel drive).
Ron Capps raced to his third Funny Car victory of the season, beating No. 1 qualifier Ashley Force Hood in the OReilly NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka in Kansas. Larry Dixon raced to his second Top Fuel win of the season. In Pro Stock, Allen Johnson won for the first time in almost three years.
A crash during a feature race at the Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D., killed longtime driver John Schulz. Schulz, 47, died after the car he was driving rolled in the modified division feature race at the West Fargo track about 9:15 p.m. Saturday.
Orlandos Eastern Conference title-clinching win over Cleveland drew more than 8.3 million viewers. TNT averaged 8.6 million viewers for the six-game series, a 37 percent increase over its 2008 conference finals coverage. TNT showed the West finals last year, drawing about 6.3 million per game for the Lakers victory over San Antonio.
Orlando is evaluating point guard Jameer Nelson for a possible return to the Magic lineup for the NBA Finals that begin Thursday night in Los Angeles. Nelson has been out since early February with what had been called a season-ending shoulder tear. Cleveland center Ben Wallace is considering retirement.
Lance Armstrong concluded the Giro dItalia in 12th place overall in Rome, then jetted home to await the birth of his fourth child. Armstrong finished 15:59 behind overall race winner Denis Menchov of Russia.
Retired players angry with the NFL Players Association over disability and pension benefits said that the unions executive director, DeMaurice Smith, may be ahead of himself in seeking their support during upcoming contract talks with the league. The informal group lashed out at comments made by Smith, who said Saturday that if there is a lockout by owners in 2011, retired player benefits would be reduced by 80 percent while it lasts.
Ratings for Game 1 of the Red Wings-Penguins Stanley Cup finals rematch were down from last year. The NBC telecast drew a 2.6 rating and a 5 share. That compared with a four-game NBC average of a 3.2 rating and a 6 share one year ago. Brett Hull and Les Jackson are out as co-general managers of the Dallas Stars, replaced by former player Joe Nieuwendyk.
The U.S. concluded five days of training and was looking forward to the arrival of members who couldnt participate in preparations for the teams World Cup qualifying matches this week. They ran practices without such key players as Landon Donovan, Carlos Bocanegra and former South Side standout DaMarcus Beasley because of their commitments to their MLS teams or European clubs. FIFA has chosen the Brazilian cities that will play host to the 2014 World Cup matches. They are Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Sao Paulo, Cuiaba, Manaus, Fortaleza, Natal, Recife, Brasilia, Salvador and Bela Horizonte.
Because of a reporters error, Woodlan pitcher Jerrid Rydells name was misspelled and his strikeout total for his no-hitter in a sectional win over Adams Central was wrong on Page 2B on Sunday. Rydell had 12 strikeouts, and he hit a triple. Also, Josh Kinsey was not credited with a home run in the game.
