Three men were hospitalized Monday after a stabbing outside the Brass Rail tavern on Broadway, according to Fort Wayne police.
The stabbing, which police spokesman Roy Sutphin described as a mutual combatants situation, happened just after 1 a.m. Monday at Broadway and Wilt Street. The injured men, ages 24, 27 and 28, all of Fort Wayne, were hospitalized – one in critical condition. Their conditions were upgraded to good and fair late Monday, Sutphin said.
Sutphin said the stabbing took place after a verbal altercation between the men after they left the tavern. One of the victims walked up to a Wilt Street home and asked a resident to call police after the stabbing, Sutphin said.
The names of the men have not been released pending an investigation.
An 8-year-old Detroit-area boy was in critically injured in a single-vehicle crash in DeKalb County early Monday, according to DeKalb County police.
The crash kept a portion of Interstate 69 near the Allen County line closed for 1 hour and 20 minutes, police said. Police say Anthony Brown, 34, of Westland, Mich., was driving north on I-69 when the Dodge Ram veered off the road, struck a culvert and caught fire. All five occupants in the truck were able to escape before being burned.
However, one of the occupants, Jonathan Hollins, 8, suffered head injuries. He was in critical condition at Parkview Hospital on Monday night. Another occupant, Samuel Hollins, 28, of Dearborn Heights, Mich., was in serious condition.
The other occupants, Tommie Hollins Jr., 29, and Terrence Hayes, 4, both of Detroit, along with Brown, suffered minor injuries.
An 80-year-old man remains hospitalized after his sport utility vehicle crashed Saturday and landed on its roof in a ditch near New Haven.
According to police, Cornell Lederman of Leo-Cedarville was listed in borderline serious to critical condition at a local hospital Sunday. Lederman suffered a broken neck, multiple rib fractures and a head injury, police said.
Lederman was driving south on South Webster Road between Edgerton and Dawkins roads when the crash occurred. His Oldsmobile Bravada went off the east side of the road and struck a concrete culvert support shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday.
An Illinois man accused of killing two people was arrested Sunday in Kosciusko County, according to sheriffs deputies.
Brian Lee Garrett, 27, of Watseka, Ill., was arrested about 7:30 p.m. Sunday just south of Mentone. Illinois police say Garrett stabbed two men to death Friday in Sheldon, Ill., and headed toward Warsaw, along with a woman who witnessed the stabbing, to visit his grandmother.
Not able to find his relative, Garrett camped out in a wooded area near Mentone, police said. The woman left Garrett on Sunday night and asked police for help.
Garrett is being held in the Kosciusko County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail on two charges of first-degree murder. He awaits extradition to Illinois.
An Angola man faces a preliminary charge of felony battery after a three-hour standoff with police Friday, according to Angola police.
Police were called to 312 E. Gale St. about 9 p.m. Friday for a report of a domestic dispute. When officers arrived, they found a woman with injuries.
Moments later, Terry Krezminski, 50, returned home armed with a gun and was threatening to use it, police said.
Police blocked off the areas around the home and called in members of the Northeast Indiana Special Response Team to negotiate with Krezminski.
Eventually, Krezminski came out brandishing a knife, and police were able to apprehend him about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.
Krezminski is being held without bail in the Steuben County Jail.
