A 78-year-old Butler man died Tuesday, his wife was critically injured and two young passengers were slightly hurt after a one-car crash in Waterloo.
The crash blocked traffic on U.S. 6 for about an hour, Waterloo police said.
The crash happened just after 6:30 p.m. at U.S. 6 and Washington Street. Beverly Davis, 71, of Butler, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu that crashed head-on into a stone wall after failing to negotiate a curve in the road, police said. Davis was trapped in the vehicle and had to be rescued by emergency personnel, police said.
Both Davis, and her husband, Dorman Davis, 78, were flown by medical helicopter to Lutheran Hospital for treatment. Dorman Davis died at Lutheran, and his wife was in critical condition Tuesday night.
The remaining passengers, Dillon Davis, 8, and Kayli Davis, 10, were taken by ambulance to DeKalb Memorial Hospital for cuts and bruises. Details on their conditions were not available.
Police were unsure why Davis failed to negotiate the curve.
