Rig hits pickup, killing driver

A Middle Point, Ohio, man died Saturday after he drove into the path of a tractor-trailer rig on U.S. 30 in Van Wert County.

William Hoersten, 62, was northbound on Ohio 49 in a Ford Ranger pickup when he pulled in front of a tractor-trailer rig that was westbound on U.S. 30 about five miles east of the Indiana-Ohio state line, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The Peterbilt rig, driven by 46-year-old Jerold W. Gould of Clarks Hill, Ind., struck Hoersten’s pickup broadside about 3:30 p.m., police said.

The crash caused the pickup to spin off the north side of the road and into a ditch.

Hoersten died at the scene.

The tractor-trailer rig was disabled, but Gould was uninjured.
