Fifteen Arlington Elementary fifth-grade graduates can now put “published author” on their résumés.

The students were members of the same reading group and wrote a book containing short essays about problems they have experienced with tips on how to handle them. They offered suggestions on what to do if your parents fight, how to deal with annoying siblings, how to make friends and what to do if you’re being bullied, among other topics.

“It’s to help kids with problems that need our help,” said Nicholas Friedrich, 12.

The book is titled “Sunnier Days: Advice from 5th Graders.” Nicholas and classmate Jamal Bryant wrote grant applications to various people and organizations who may be interested in donating money to help publish the book. Several individual donors came through in addition to a grant from Youth As Resources.

The $8 book is available at Barnes & Noble and through Amazon.com. The students held a book signing at the school and at the Barnes & Noble at Glenbrook Square on June 2.

So far, they’ve sold 140 copies.

“I feel famous,” said Logan Nicola, 11.
