Fremont parts plant damaged in fire

A Steuben County auto parts making plant sustained about $250,000 in damage Sunday in an early-morning fire, according to Fremont firefighters.

The blaze at Metaldyne Corp., 307 S. Tillotson St., Fremont, was reported just after 6 a.m. Sunday. Firefighters had the blaze under control in just more than an hour.

The fire started outside, in the rear of the building and was ruled accidental, caused by two transformers.

The fire was contained to a maintenance area at the rear of the building, and firefighters reported no injuries.

Man critically hurt in home stabbing

A Fort Wayne man was critically wounded Sunday in a stabbing on the city’s south side, according to Fort Wayne police.

Police were called to a home at, 4427 Wilmette St., near Lafayette Street, just after 3:30 a.m. Sunday for a report of a stabbing.

There officers found Aaron Mertl, 33, of Fort Wayne, suffering from an apparent stab wound made by a knife, police said.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police say the stabbing was a result of an argument at the home among Mertl, his wife and his sister.

Details surrounding what caused the argument were not available Sunday.

Mertl’s condition was upgraded to fair Sunday afternoon, said John Chambers, police spokesman.

New Haven garage destroyed by blaze

A New Haven garage was deemed a total loss after it engulfed in flames Sunday morning, according to New Haven Adams Township firefighters.

The fire was reported just after 1 a.m. Sunday in the detached garage at a home at 8512 Parent Road. When firefighters arrived, they found the garage engulfed in flames.

Neighbors reported hearing fireworks go off moments before the fire started, firefighters said.

The garage was deemed a total loss.

No one was inside the garage at the time, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
