STURGIS, Ky. – The weekend death of an 8-year-old boy in a church elevator shaft is under investigation by Kentucky State Police.
The Rev. Nate Harper told the Evansville Courier & Press that the accident happened as a wedding reception for the boy’s grandmother was winding down.
Police said the boy was found lodged in an elevator at First Christian Church in Sturgis on Saturday about 8 p.m. local time. They said no foul play is suspected but an investigation is continuing.
Union County Coroner Stephen Shouse identified the boy as Zachary Waddell and said Monday that Zachary died as a result of compression asphyxia, meaning he couldn’t breathe after the elevator came down on him.
The Courier & Press reported that Shouse is a distant cousin of the boy’s mother.
