Verbatim: Animal Care & Control issues hot car weather alert

Statement issued Monday:

Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control is issuing a Hot Car Weather Alert to pet owners as temperatures climb above the 80 degree mark later this week.

A car acts like a greenhouse, trapping the sun’s heat. Even moderately warm temperatures outside can quickly lead to deadly temperatures inside a closed car.

Pet owners are cautioned not to leave any animal unattended inside a car even if the car is parked in the shade with windows cracked open.

Studies show that on comparatively cool days, such as 72 degrees, a car’s internal temperature will rocket to 116 degrees within 60 minutes. Partially opening the windows hardly slows the rise at all.
