Twin teachers get 20 years for dealing meth near a school

SOUTH BEND – Twin sisters who lost their jobs as teachers in northern Indiana after their arrests on methamphetamine charges have been sentenced to prison.

Maria and Michelle Stancati of South Bend each pleaded guilty last month to one felony count of dealing methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of school property. A St. Joseph County judge on Tuesday gave 20-year prison terms to both women.

The 35-year-old sisters both apologized for their actions as they spoke during the sentencing hearing.

Michelle Stancati was a teacher at North Side Middle School in Elkhart, while Maria Stancati taught at Elkhart Memorial High School.

They were arrested in November after authorities said a meth lab in their home caught fire.
