Tom Cruise has chosen to accept another impossible mission. He and J.J. Abrams have signed on to produce a fourth installment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. Abrams directed Cruise’s last outing as operative Ethan Hunt in “Mission: Impossible III” in 2006.

While they have set 2011 for the release, it’s still unknown whether Cruise will star or Abrams will direct. Studio spokeswoman Katie Martin Kelley says Cruise and Abrams are only attached as producers at this point.

Police chiefs in probe

Two Ohio police chiefs are being investigated on allegations that they burglarized the home of a woman carrying twins for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick so they could sell photos and other information to a tabloid, an official said. No charges have been filed.

The alleged burglary happened in mid-May in Martins Ferry, and the allegations against Police Chief Barry Carpenter and Bridgeport Police Chief Chad DoJack surfaced a week later, the law enforcement official said.

The burglars were allegedly after “pictures, phone message, all those things” at the home of the surrogate, Michelle Ross, who is no longer believed to be staying in the Martins Ferry area, the official said. Reports say she’s due to give birth in July.

Emmys a week later

The Emmy Awards are being postponed to avoid sharing the night with MTV’s Video Music Awards on Sept. 13.

CBS and the Television Academy said that the 61st Primetime Emmys would be presented Sept. 20 instead.

Jack Sussman of CBS said that “it’s best for the industry and the audience that these events not compete against each other.”

Nominations will be announced July 16.

O’Brien wins week

Nielsen says David Letterman got a ratings boost from his squabble with Sarah Palin. But his late-night rival Conan O’Brien retains the upper hand after two weeks as “Tonight” show host.

Overall for the week of June 8, NBC’s “Tonight” won in total viewers as well as key demographic groups, Nielsen Media Research says.

Even so, CBS’ “Late Show” edged out “Tonight” on three of those nights.

For the week, “Late Show” had 3.67 million viewers, and “Tonight” had 3.77 million.

Melissa Rycroft is becoming ABC’s go-to performer, adding “Good Morning America” to her network credits, which already include “The Bachelor” and “Dancing with the Stars.”

Rycroft, 26, will make eight appearances as a “Good Morning America” contributor, doing fun, lighthearted pieces beginning next week, and she’ll also travel for the show, an ABC official said.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have donated $1 million to the U.N. refugee agency providing aid to hundreds of thousands uprooted by violence in Pakistan.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says it is grateful for the donation from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, and the money will go to alleviating suffering caused by the “most challenging humanitarian crisis of the past decade.”
