Lightning sets fireworks store ablaze

More than a dozen fire departments were called to a fireworks store off Interstate 69 in Steuben County after lightning hit it around dawn Friday morning.

The Fremont Fire Department said the call to Shelton Fireworks came in shortly after 6 a.m. When they got to 7055 N. Old U.S. 27, north of the Indiana Toll Road, firefighters found heavy smoke and fire, with fireworks shooting as far as 100 feet from the metal storage building.

The embers reached the roadway and parked tractor-trailer rigs at nearby truck stops, the department said.

The department said it took more than an hour and a half to get the blaze under control. The damage estimate is $50,000 for the building and destroyed merchandise.
