Decision imminent on ’10 girls state site

A decision for the site of the 2010 IHSAA girls basketball state finals is expected to be announced Monday or Tuesday, according to IHSAA sports information director Jason Wille.

Memorial Coliseum is one of four sites in the running for the event, with Bloomington, Muncie and West Lafayette.

The girls state finals are being moved for a year because of scheduling conflicts in Indianapolis.

Members of the Fort Wayne/Allen County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Fort Wayne Sports Corp., Memorial Coliseum and the mayor’s office showed off the arena May 29 and unveiled proposals for playing host for the state championships in the four classes March 6.

Edwards repeats on Milwaukee Mile

Carl Edwards made the most of his one-day West Allis, Wis., getaway, winning the Nationwide series race at the Milwaukee Mile after taking a brief break from his Sprint Cup duties in California. It’s a repeat win at Milwaukee and the first Nationwide win of this season for Edwards, who took the lead from fellow Cup commuter Kyle Busch with 44 laps remaining left in the race and wasn’t significantly challenged the rest of the way.

Hornaday wins on 51st birthday

Ron Hornaday Jr. celebrated his 51st birthday by winning the NASCAR Camping World Truck series race at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis., his 41st career truck series victory. Dennis Setzer finished second, followed by Brian Scott.

Red Bull driver takes British pole

Sebastian Vettel captured the pole for today’s British Grand Prix, while Formula One championship leader Jenson Button will start from a season-worst sixth. In his revamped Red Bull car, Vettel set the fastest lap time in qualifying for the third time this year, finishing in 1 minute, 19.509 seconds to edge Button’s Brawn GP teammate Rubens Barrichello by 0.347 seconds.

McLaren wants deal with F1 soon

McLaren chief Martin Whitmarsh says any peace deal with Formula One’s governing body must be reached before the end of July to prevent the British team and seven others from forming a rival series in 2010.

Racer dies after Wisconsin crash

Thomas Thrash Jr., a 48-year-old driver from Houston, died after a single-car accident at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. Thrash was participating in the Sports Car Club of America-sanctioned Chicago Region June Sprints event when he lost control of his E Production class Mazda RX-7, with the car entering the gravel trap and ending up against the tire wall.

Klitschko keeps heavyweight titles

Wladimir Klitschko stopped Ruslan Chagaev in a hastily put together title fight before 61,000 fans at a soccer stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The IBF and WBO champion added the Ring Magazine belt to his haul, after referee Eddie Cotton stopped the fight before the 10th round.

Molson brothers to buy Canadiens

Three Molson brothers have reached an agreement in principle to buy the Gillett family’s stake in the Montreal Canadiens. Gillett owns 80.1 percent of the team; the brewing company Molson Coors owns the remaining 19.9 percent.

Local teams lose in regionals

Two local soccer teams lost in pool play at the U.S. Youth Soccer Region II Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Fort Wayne Fever U-18 boys lost 2-0 to (OS) Cup 91 Red out of Ohio. In girls U-19 play, the Fever team lost 1-0 to JUSC out of Iowa.

Phelps’ best time takes 100 butterfly

Michael Phelps set a personal best in winning the 100-meter butterfly at the Canada Cup in Montreal in 50.48 seconds. His previous best was 50.58 in Beijing.
