A Spencerville man who worked at a Leo-Cedarville hardware store for almost four decades died Thursday of injuries he received in a crash nearly three weeks ago.

L. Cornell Lederman, 80, was a talented mechanic and carpenter who had a quick smile and was well-liked in his community, said his son, 47-year-old Todd Lederman.

L. Cornell Lederman was taken to the hospital in critical condition June 6 after his sport utility vehicle drove off South Webster Road and struck a concrete culvert support between Edgerton and Dawkins roads. The vehicle rolled, throwing Lederman, and landed on its top in a 20-foot-deep ditch, according to police.

He is the county’s ninth traffic death of the year, the Allen County Coroner’s Office said.

Lederman lived in the Leo-Cedarville and Spencerville area his entire life, working in sales at Leo Builders Supply for 37 years, according to his son.

He was mechanically minded and liked to work on tractors and build furniture.

“He was the kind of guy that was just good at everything – he was a good mechanic and a good carpenter,” Todd Lederman said.

Lederman also loved to spend time on his 12-acre farm, where he once raised horses, sheep and rabbits.

Lederman leaves behind three children: Todd Lederman and daughters Jodi Maxton, 50, and Gina Anderson, 41. He also had six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

He was a member of North Leo Mennonite Church and felt a strong connection with his faith, according to his son.

“He loved the Lord and had the peace of knowing where he was going,” Todd Lederman said.
