Two people died and three others were seriously injured early Sunday when three motorcycles on which they were traveling hit a curb just east of downtown.
Fort Wayne police were called to Maumee Avenue and Comparet Street about 3:30 a.m. Sunday where three motorcycles had crashed.
When police arrived, they found a 38-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman both dead, police spokesman officer Michael Joyner said.
The identities of the two were withheld Sunday pending family notification, Allen County Coroner Dr. E. Jon Brandenberger said.
Autopsies were performed on the two; both died of blunt-force trauma, having suffered head injuries, he said.
Police say two motorcyclists heading east on Maumee Avenue failed to negotiate a curve just west of Comparet Street.
Those operators, each carrying a companion, hit a curb, causing the bikes to flip and throwing all four people, Joyner said.
A third motorcyclist, also carrying a companion and following the other two cycles, was unable to stop in time and also hit the curb, throwing both people off the cycle.
None of the people involved in the crashes was wearing a helmet, Joyner said.
Three people were taken to a hospital for injuries ranging from broken bones to head trauma. All three were listed in serious condition Sunday.
Names of the injured people have not been released by police, pending family notification.
A sixth person in the crash was not hospitalized, Joyner said.
Speed is believed to have played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne-Allen County Crash Team.
