Kroger said this week that stores in its central division - which includes Fort Wayne - might have sold beef contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
It has recalled store-brand beef supplied by JBS Swift Beef Co., which expanded its own recall earlier this week. The recall affects Kroger and Scott's stores and others not in the area.
Kroger is asking customers to check their freezers for certain packages of store-brand and store-packaged ground beef with sell-by dates from April 27 to June 1. The grocer noted that it has stopped selling the recalled brands.
Kroger is notifying customers with messages on register receipts and alerts by telephone and e-mail if they purchased a recalled item using their shopper's card.
