Right-hander Erik Davis had one of his best starts of the season, tossing a one-hitter in five
innings, and the TinCaps hung on Friday to beat host Dayton 5-3.
Davis (7-3) retired the side in order in four of his five innings. In the third, he hit a batter, allowed a single to former IU star Andrew Means and then a walk to load the bases with two outs. Davis then walked in a run before getting a pop out to end the inning. It was the fourth time this season Davis allowed one earned run or fewer in at least four innings. Against South Bend on June 6, Davis allowed only two hits and one earned run in six innings to get the victory.
Fort Wayne left 11 runners on base and was only 2 of 13 with runners in scoring position but managed enough offense on 10 hits to move to 7-1 in the second half.
Blake Tekotte hit his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot, in the third inning. Allan Dykstra added an RBI single and Drew Cumberland scored on a wild pitch in the inning for a 3-0 lead. Kevin Hansen had a run-scoring single in the sixth and Cumberland added an insurance run with an RBI double in the eighth.
The TinCaps return to Parkview Field at today at 7:05 p.m. for a four-game series with Great Lakes.
