Awards and recognition

•4-H announced that its 2009 Top Achievers are David Berning of Hoagland and Nicole Mudrack of Fort Wayne. The 2009 Honor Achievers are Amelia Buuck of Roanoke, Bethany Emenhiser of Hoagland, Dylan Goetterman of Fort Wayne, Derek Oliver of Leo-Cedarville, Maggie Richardson of Garrett and Elizabeth Rohlf of Monroeville. They will be recognized for their achievements at 8 p.m. July 18 at the Home and Family Arts Building on the Allen County Fairgrounds.

•The winners of the Raymond Rosenberger Foundation awards are Martin “Bud” Scheimann, the Maxine Rippe Award; Pamela Miller, the Martha Goodrich Award; Anthony M. Zirille, the Minette Baum Award; and Ron Turpin, the Monsignor Thiele Award.

Clarence Lutter of LaOtto has been recognized by the National Weather Service for his 15 years of service taking weather observations and precipitation measurements.

Education matters

•Applications for the Lewis C. Bose Scholarship for Educational Leadership are due July 24. The $2,000 scholarship is awarded to an Indiana educator who will attend an advanced degree program. Call 317-571-0051 or go to www.boselaw.com/scholarships.cfm.

People helping people

•The Retired Senior Volunteer Program of DeKalb, LaGrange Noble and Steuben Counties is sponsoring the “Pack a Backpack” program in DeKalb and Noble counties and collecting donations of backpacks and school supplies. For information on times and locations for donations, call 260-925-0917.

The Allen County Public Library is having “Diaper Daze” from July 15 to 24. Donations of disposable diapers, pull-ups, underwear and T-shirts for children and teenagers and new women’s underwear, including maternity, will be accepted. All library locations are accepting donations, which will be donated to several area charities.

•Children attending the Breeden YMCA Summer Camp are asking the community for help in collecting 1,000 cans of non-perishable items for Project Help. Donations can be dropped off at the front desk of the Breeden YMCA by Aug. 14. Call 260-668-3607 or go to www.breedenymca.org.

Volunteer opportunities

Parkview Home Health and Hospice is in need of Allen County volunteers to help hospice clients and their families. Those interested must complete a training class. Classes are from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 14, 21 and 28 and Aug. 4, 11 and 18 at the Parkview Home Health and Hospice office, 1900 Carew St., Suite 6. Call 373-9896 or e-mail mauna.cowan@parkview.com.
