My name is Mert Mullins and I live in Huntington County, smack dab in the middle between Roanoke and Huntington, on U.S. 24.
When folks drive by at 60 mph, they would never know that behind the house lies an oasis of serenity that we escape to every day. We enjoy the sound of trickling water, the bullfrogs singing, and watching many species of birds as they feed.
Our garden started more than 25 years ago as a vegetable patch. Soon I realized that green beans and corn were readily available at the farmer's market, and I decided that if I was going to labor in the soil, it would be in an effort to create a corner that would boast a riot of color, no matter what the season.
My husband and I have come a long way since then with lots of trial and error, but each year the garden grows larger, more beautiful and less labor intensive.
I think we have finally achieved what we set out to create (at least until next spring when I find something new that I must have!)
Enjoy my garden!
