SYLVANIA, Ohio – Eunjung Yi blew a six-stroke lead then hit a 10-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Morgan Pressel and capture her first LPGA victory Sunday in what might be the final Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.
The 21-year-old second-year pro began the day with a four-shot lead. She birded two of the first three holes to go up six shots.
Pressel, chasing her third career victory, pulled even by holing a wedge shot for eagle on the par-5 17th hole.
Yi, from South Korea, finished at 18-under 266 to earn the $210,000 first prize. She had missed the cut in four of her seven starts this year on tour and her biggest paycheck was about $11,000 for finishing tied for 26th at the Corona Championship.
Michelle Wie made a back-nine rush to finish at 16-under, tied for third.
The tournaments contract with its title sponsor, the LPGA and Highland Meadows Golf Club expired after the final round.
Two newspapers are reporting the Celtics have reached an agreement with free agent Rasheed Wallace. Bill Strickland, Wallaces agent, told the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe that the 34-year-old forward told him to call off meetings the agent was in the process of scheduling with the Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks. Wallace played the last six seasons with the Detroit Pistons, where he won an NBA championship in 2004. Wallace averaged 12 points and 7.4 rebounds last season.
Tammy Sutton-Brown had 22 points and nine rebounds to leading the host Indiana Fever past the Atlanta Dream 78-74 for a franchise-best eighth straight victory. Tamika Catchings added 19 points, nine rebounds and six steals, and Katie Douglas scored 10 for the Fever (8-2), which remains the WNBAs best team.
Bryce Petty threw three touchdown passes without throwing an incompletion as the United States won the gold medal at the Junior World Championship in Canton, Ohio, with a 41-3 victory against Canada. Virginia Tech running back David Wilson rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown to help the U.S. win the first world tournament of American football for players age 19 and younger.
American crews won just two of the 19 trophies at stake on finals day of the Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames in England. The first of these came in the opening race, the Temple Cup for student eights and the only all-American race of the day. The lightweight crew from Princeton extended its unbeaten season, beating Browns freshmen crew by three-quarters of a length. Browns varsity crew beat Britains under-23 squad in the Ladies Plate for intermediate eights, by a half length.
Three-time Olympic gold medalist Jason Lezak says his Jewish heritage has inspired him to compete in Israels Maccabiah Games instead of the upcoming World Swimming Championships in Rome. The Maccabiah Games are an international competition for Jewish athletes held every four years in Israel. The 10-day event opens July 13.
Top-seeded April Ross and Jennifer Kessy of the United States edged third-seeded Brazilians Larissa and Juliana 30-28, 23-21 in the womens final at the World Beach Volleyball Championships in Stavanger, Norway. Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann of Germany beat top-seeded Brazilians Harley and Alison in straight sets 21-16, 21-19 to win the mens final.
