Wrong-way driver killed in crash

A Warsaw man died Monday after his car veered into a lane of oncoming traffic on U.S. 30 and then struck a utility pole, according to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies said William Adams, 70, was driving his Ford Escort wagon east on U.S. 30, just west of Columbia City, when his car veered into a westbound lane.

Adams continued to drive toward oncoming traffic for about one-tenth of a mile before driving off the road and hitting a utility pole, deputies said.

The driver suffered head trauma and was taken to Parkview Whitley Hospital, where he died a short time later from his injuries, deputies said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, authorities said.

Deputies said they think Adams was a diabetic but are not sure whether that contributed to the crash.
